Rosa’s Thai, Coney Street, York – Restaurant Review

Sunday lunchtime on one of the hottest weeks of the year. Just before one of York’s best-loved high streets turns into a scene from Dante’s Peak, Mrs C and I pay a long overdue visit to Rosa’s Thai. I have a Pavlovian response that whenever I’m offered a Thai restaurant to review, every fibre of my body screams, “Yes!” like Meg Ryan in When Harry Met Sally.

Maybe it’s a generational thing that in my twenties and thirties it was all about going for a post-pub curry with mates. And as much as I still love a chicken tikka with extra coriander and a pilau rice in my ‘other’ decade, my default is Thai, usually before a gig. Or after one. Or in this case a Sunday lunchtime.

So Mrs C and I take our seats in the elegant but not so posh you need a dinner jacket restaurant near HMV. Top of the high street; you can’t miss it.

And naturally we default to a table by the window so we can watch the masses pass by while perusing the menu. And there’s no shortage of choices.

At £14.50, the Veggie Platter is perfect for sharing. It consists of Fresh Summer Rolls – rice paper stuffed with mixed veg, tamarind sauce and fragrant herbs, served with chilli sauce and crushed peanuts; Sweetcorn Cakes; Salt and Pepper Tofu; Rosa’s Homemade Spring Rolls (hand-rolled with crunchy veg, celery, mushroom and glass noodles, crisp fried and served with sweet chilli sauce) and Pumpkin Crackers. They are a meal in themselves, but as a meat-eater, I also opt for Honey-Marinated Pork Skewers (£6,75), which are equally delicious. Tenderised with honey soy sauce and roasted coriander seeds, served with a homemade tamarind dipping sauce, I feel like I’ve died and gone to culinary heaven.

Washed down with a cool glass of coconut water, I’m already wondering when we can come again. But that’s merely a starter, and though I would have been fine with just that, I feel I need to sample a main. And Rosa’s Fried Rice does not disappoint either. Jasmine rice stir-fried in homemade sauce with eggs, onion and spring greens is welcome counterpoint to the spicy, sweet starters. There’s too much of it, so I’m defeated early, but at £10.50, it’s worth every penny.

Rachel’s Veg and Tofu Pad Thai (£10) also goes down well, but again, she’s also full after about two thirds.

I’m hoping that Rosa’s Thai does well, not just during the summer months when the influx of tourists breathes life into the high street, but year round. The service by Yonlada is excellent, and the location is great if you’ve had a hard day’s shopping, or just face a delicious meal before a movie at the nearby City Screen.

It’s not so much a case of ‘if’ we go again but ‘when’.
